Bye Bye Randy! Moss To Don Purple Again
Randy Moss is throwing up the deuces to the New England area this morning, as Patriots coach Bill Belichick sent the disgruntled WR back to the team that drafted him back in 1998. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Moss was traded to the Minnesota Vikings this morning, in exchange for a 3rd round draft pick.
Last night, myself and Pigskin Loving Lady talked about the then-possible trade on our Blog Talk radio show, which you can listen to by clicking here. While I’m sure we’ll hear many opinions and thoughts over the Moss trade, I’m going to add to the Armchair GM archives as well. As crazy as this trade may seem, it’s actually not. This was the perfect opportunity for both sides to part ways and not lose out on anything. The divorce seemed to be inevitable, with Moss saying after the Week 1 win over Cincinnati that he felt unappreciated and this would be his last year in New England, but not in the NFL.
So Bill Belichick did what he always does: He made moves. And in my opinion, it’s not a bad move. Here’s why:
First, Randy Moss was not playing to his potential so far this season. Moss’s totals for the entire year were as follows: 9 receptions, 139 yards and 3 TDs, over 4 weeks. This is dismal for a #1 receiver to have such low numbers through the 1st quarter of the NFL season. Terrell Owens beat out Moss’s totals in receptions and yards in one game alone. Moss had one great catch for the year, and that was the TD he caught on “Revis Island” against the NY Jets. But for the most part, fans and fantasy football owners were putting APBs out on Moss. Folks complained that Moss played lazy and was not blocking as he should have in the Pats big win over Miami on Monday night . Maybe Moss was over being a Patriot at that point. But he certainly didn’t give Belichick a reason to keep him around and re-sign him after the 2010 season.
Second, this is the perfect situation, simply because New England gets something out of the deal. Moss was in the final year of his contract. Letting him go as a free agent at the end of the season meant that the Patriots were going to get nothing for letting him walk away. Trading Moss to Minnesota for a draft pick allows the Patriots to be compensated for losing their big target, and letting Minnesota deal with his upcoming offseason demands. While many are saying a 3rd round pick is too low for Moss, I disagree. Moss isn’t the Randy Moss of 1998. He’s still a great asset, but he’s also 33 years old who has had his share of minor issues. A 1st round pick is out of the question, and a 2nd round pick would be a bit risky, especially for a guy who may choose another team to join in just a few months. A 3rd round pick is a perfect compensation for Moss. And being a draft wizard that he is, Belichick will make that draft pick worth it.
With the return of Wes Welker and the emergence of TE Aaron Hernandez, Moss became expendable. That being said, this trade instantly puts new life into the Vikings, and particularly Brett Favre, who has aged tremendously from just a year ago and is missing one of his targets in Sidney Rice (out with a hip injury). This also puts new life into Moss, who was unhappy with his contract situation. A guy that was once his rival, is now his teammate. What’s fitting is, the Patriots play the Vikings on Halloween, in Minnesota. Can you say, DVR?!
This trade works out for all of the parties involved. Many wishes to Moss in going full circle in his NFL career. Purple is his color anyway.
